The delicate skin around your eyes, or eye contour, has virtually no sebaceous glands (oil-producing glands), which makes this area more prone to dryness and sensitivity.
Let’s take a look at what causes skin aging/deterioration around the eyes?
- Declining levels of collagen and elastin cause the upper eyelid to sag/droop.
- Repetitive facial movements cause crow’s feet wrinkles to form – this is then accentuated by loss of elasticity due to sun damage and aging.
- Premature facial lines are created by thinning skin – this is due to declining collagen levels and weakening of the hydration barrier.
- Discolouration/dark circles can be hereditary, but are commonly caused by fatigue, stress and smoking.
- Genetics are the main cause of bags/swelling, however, lifestyle, stress and smoking can also play a role in the development of bags under the eyes.
- A decline in the structural components of the skin and lack of sebaceous glands hinder water retention, which leads to thinning skin and signs of dehydration.
- Dryness and signs of fatigue will deteriorate the natural radiance of the skin.
What can we do to prevent aging in the eye contour area?
It is recommended to start a good eye contour routine in your twenties, the same way you moisturise and nourish the rest of your facial skin. If you have not started ealry, don’t worry, the formation of new wrinkles can be delayed and minimised and wrinkles that have already formed, can be softened by using the right products.
What products to use:
Personal preference and budget limitations will affect your decision-making. Also, you need to understand the distinct differences between the available products, and especially the difference between a serum and a moisturizer.
Moisturizer
Moisturizers have one primary purpose: moisturize and hydrate skin.
Botanical oils and extracts contained in moisturizers will form a nourishing barrier on the skin – keeping natural moisture in and environmental toxins out.
Some moisturizers may also contain active ingredients, but these are limited to function primarily in the outer layer of the skin.
Serum
Serums typically have smaller molecules combined with high concentrations of active ingredients. These are designed to penetrate, improve and/or nourish the skin.
Serums should always be applied directly onto the skin after cleansing and toning, because you want the active ingedients to penetrate as deeply as possible into your skin.
In simple terms, this means that serums penetrate through your skin to find the water-based layers that are similar to the serum.
Moisturizers on the other hand, tend to stick to the top layers of your skin, which have an oil-based composition similar to the moisturizer.
